Title: Girls Made of Snow & Glass

Author: Melissa Bashardoust

Genre: Fantasy

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

SUMMARY

Sixteen-year-old Mina is motherless, her magician father is vicious, and her silent heart has never beat with love for anyone—has never beat at all, in fact, but she’d always thought that fact normal. She never guessed that her father cut out her heart and replaced it with one of glass. When she moves to Whitespring Castle and sees its king for the first time, Mina forms a plan: win the king’s heart with her beauty, become queen, and finally know love. The only catch is that she’ll have to become a stepmother.

Fifteen-year-old Lynet looks just like her late mother, and one day she discovers why: a magician created her out of snow in the dead queen’s image, at her father’s order. But despite being the dead queen made flesh, Lynet would rather be like her fierce and regal stepmother, Mina. She gets her wish when her father makes Lynet queen of the southern territories, displacing Mina. Now Mina is starting to look at Lynet with something like hatred, and Lynet must decide what to do—and who to be—to win back the only mother she’s ever known…or else defeat her once and for all.

Entwining the stories of both Lynet and Mina in the past and present, Girls Made of Snow and Glass traces the relationship of two young women doomed to be rivals from the start. Only one can win all, while the other must lose everything—unless both can find a way to reshape themselves and their story.

OPINION

Love. Love. Love. Love. Love. This book is definitely going on my Gem List. Oh, there were so many things that just grabbed me and wouldn’t let me go! I literally had to stop myself from reading it too quickly because I just didn’t want the story to end. There were so many things I liked and just a couple of things I didn’t like or found confusing.

I'm a sucker for a multiple POV books and I loved the complicated relationship between Mina and Lynet. I loved Mina's backstory, and this world. As much as I love a good romance, it was really refreshing not to have one forced in this story.

Also, that climax...

There was a bit of a jarring change. From the beginning, the POV would shift between 16-year-old Mina to 15-year-old Lynet until the story caught up to the present day. The author didn’t include any time stamp or year, so at first it was a bit confusing when the story first jumped to younger Mina.

There was a curse involved in the story. I’ll try not to get too much into it because of spoilers, but . . . I don’t know. In some ways I felt like it wasn’t needed, but in some ways it was. You know how when you’re editing your WIP and you have to decide on a certain character whether or not they should be taken out? Well, this curse was in the middle of those two choice, IMP. When it wasn’t talked about in the story, I completely forgot about it, until a character mentioned “the curse” but in the end it played a role in the story. So, I don’t know, my feelings toward it are neutral.

As a lover of fantasy and fairy tale retelling’s, this has officially risen to my favorites list. If you haven’t already checked this gem out, I would highly recommend it!
